What is unbonding in staking?

Unbonding is the waiting period between asking to stop staking and getting your funds back. The network enforces it, so it can still penalise misbehaviour that happened just before you left.

Why the wait exists

If people could withdraw instantly, a validator could misbehave and its stake could leave before the network noticed. The unbonding period keeps the stake in place long enough for any penalty to apply.

How long it takes

Each network sets its own period. Some examples:

  • Cosmos Hub, Celestia and Injective: 21 days.
  • Aptos: about 14 days.
  • Ethereum: an exit queue, then about a day or more.
  • BNB Chain: 7 days. Polygon: about 4 days. Polkadot and NEAR: about 2 days.

What happens during unbonding

The amount you undelegated earns nothing and cannot be moved until the period ends. Evernodes shows each network's unbonding period on its page before you delegate, and counts down the days in your account.

Questions people ask

Can unbonding be cancelled or sped up?
No. The network itself enforces the period, so no validator or platform can shorten it.
